The nomination comes as the program, entitled "Placido Domingo, Greatest Living Tenor," has been airing on public television stations across the country. Since being made available to sister stations in September, the production has aired more than 250 times on 131 stations in 63 markets in 22 states. Major markets airing the show in prime time include New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Houston, Tampa and Cleveland. The show has aired numerous times on its home station, PBS SoCal.
The show is one of three finalists in the Press Club's Documentary or Special Program category for shows of under 30 minutes. Winners will be announced at an awards dinner Nov. 18 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.
In a wide-ranging interview with Reiff, Domingo, who is general director of LA Opera, discusses his storied career, his "friendly" rivalry with Luciano Pavarotti, the future of opera and, at age 71, how long he plans to keep singing.
